The Crystal Method @ Fox Theatre

ISO 1250 * f/2.8 * 1/40s * D700 * 12-24mm * 24-70mm * SB800 flash

This is the hardest part about doing this blog.  Writing DJ reviews.  This stems from the fact that I’ve really only been into electronic dance music for about a year (Boo-hoo, figure it out, I know.)  However, as you can see from my little last.fm chart over there, it’s pretty much all I’ve been listening to as of late.  I have been a TCM fan for alot longer than that and will say that they have definately shapped my current taste in music.

So this was round three shooting The Crystal Method this year and it was probably the best overall TCM shoot to date.  For this set, I was able to get shots while on the stage, which was a hell of a lot easier than when shooting at Beta Nightclub.  I was pretty much able to roam around freely.  However, I didn’t go directly in front of the decks because I just didn’t feel comfortable doing it.  So the stage access was a plus.  The negative was the lighting.  I haven’t seen that much red lighting in awhile.  (I have an idea.  Someone bring the lighting rig from Beta to the Fox.  Genius, I know.)

One thing that makes shooting these guys fun is that they don’t stand behind the decks all night.  Scott Kirkland was pretty much all over the stage last night, which made for some interesting shots.  Not only that, the crowd seemed to get a little more amped whenever he stepped out from behind the decks.

Thanks to Jen @ Three Artist Management for setting me up with a photo pass and to Josh for allowing to me to roam the stage.

Coldplay @ Pepsi Center 11.21

Monday, November 24th, 2008

While I am not a huge Coldplay fan, I will say that they put on a pretty decent show.  Despite the size of this venue (12,000 plus seats), they somehow make it seem like they’re playing some place that holds under 5,000.  About 3/4 of the way through the show, they ran towards the back of the venue, jogged up a flight of stairs and played a couple acoustic tunes in the middle of the crowd.  Lead singer Chris Martin suggested those in front get on their Blackberry’s and tell their friends they paid too much for front row tickets.

Shooting review:

The photo pit wasn’t in-front of the stage like normal.  The stage was ‘U’ shaped and the designated shooting area was along the side of the stage.  The main and other part of the stage were so far off, even using the 70-200mm was almost not enough.

David Guetta @ Beta Nightclub - 11.20

Monday, November 24th, 2008

French DJ/Producer David Guetta brought a lot more energy to his set at Beta Nightclub than I was anticipating.  Always a plus when DJ shooting.

Here is a set from his weekly radio show:

Deadmau5 @ Fox Theatre - 11.19

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Deadmau5 filled Beta Nightclub when he played in Denver a few months ago and Fox Theatre was no different.  I’d have to say that I enjoyed this set more only because I was more familar with his music, specifically his latest album - Random Album Title.

The Crystal Method @ Beta

Friday, November 14th, 2008

The Crystal Method played Beta Nightclub for the second time this year, once again playing to a packed house, which is no surprise.  They ended their set with a track from their upcoming fourth studio album, which is set to drop some time in early 2009, so keep a look out for that.  Now…if we could only just get them to start a ‘Live Show’ tour…
